Notts County built Meadow Lane in 1910 after struggling with cricket fixture priorities at their previous location. They transported one stand across the River Trent for this expedited project. The stadium's first match against Forest established England's closest derby rivalry (300 meters apart) and drew 27,000 fans—more than today's capacity.

Major renovations occurred in 1923, after WWII bombing (1942), and in the 1970s. Following stadium disasters elsewhere, three new stands were constructed while preserving one historical section.
