St Mary’s Stadium, the home of Premier League Club Southampton since
2001, is an all-seater football venue in Southampton, Hampshire, England.
With a capacity of 32,384, it is currently the largest football stadium in South
East England.
The Taylor Report, issued on 29th January 1990, mandated that all First and
Second Division clubs convert their stadiums to all-seater venues by August
1994.
The club's directors initially opted to upgrade The Dell (the club’s former
stadium) into an all-seater stadium, completing the project in 1993.
However, relocation talks persisted due to The Dell’s capacity of just over 15,000.
Despite this constraint, Southampton continued to defy the odds and
remained competitive in the newly formed FA Premier League after 1992.
After a highly unsuccessful attempt to build a new 25,000 seater stadium and
leisure complex at Stoneham, the club discussed a move with the city council
to a disused gas work site in the heart of the city.
The move was cited as the
club “returning home”, as the club was formed by members of the nearby St
Mary’s Church, as the football team St. Mary’s Church Young Men’s
Association before becoming Southampton St. Mary’s and eventually,
Southampton.
The work started in December 1999 and was completed at the
end of July 2001.
